Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can be a good source of damage or more AD or even more affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to modernized Common or Magic gear due to their higher requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a type of upgrade that can be applied to weapons and armor items. They increase the performance of the item they are attached to. Armor upgrades can be found in the world of the game and purchased from Blacksmiths on bonfires. Alternately, they can be salvaged from items that have upgrade components inside them, with a professional or higher salvage kit.

The amount of damage that an armored item or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the degree of upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will increase its ability to absorb damage. But, it's important to be aware that this upgrade will increase its weight, which will cause it to be heavier than it was before.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different impact. Certain upgrades give armor an additional number of health points while others make it lighter and more powerful. The name of the upgrade will tell you the kind of upgrade that an item will be given, as illustrated below.

Some of the upgrades also require magic or a hybrid technology and magic, which is shown by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges for use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. The charges associated with these upgrades are updated daily or never expire, according to the upgrade.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to upgrade your armor. You can locate it by exploring and looting small treasure chests. Titanium is more costly, however, it is available at the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to higher level armor pieces. These upgrades can provide a significant boost to performance and are worth the cost, especially for single-handed weapons.

Upgrading a piece of armor to its maximum upgrade level will significantly increase its defense capabilities but the wearer must be aware that increasing its weight will dramatically reduce its agility and speed. Therefore, it is typically not recommended to upgrade the majority of armor pieces that are higher than +9 since the added defense is generally not worth the weight and power costs of the upgrades required.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade could enhance the damage caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain weapons come with special enhancements to enhance their intrinsic characteristics. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage).

Most weapon upgrades require three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons, and a whetblade for applying. They can be obtained by doing side quests, or killing a certain number of monsters or bosses or from the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade item a weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade you need to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a certain amount of bars. The more bars you need to complete an upgrade, the more expensive the upgrade. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade weapon and equipment sets has changed a bit. In the past you could go to an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain amount of Bars to upgrade your equipment or weapon to a higher rarity. You could do this until your weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would be reset.

You can still do this, but the process is high on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're better off going to stores and purchasing equipment with low upgrade levels, but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These items have a better likelihood of granting you most prestigious tier of benefits and blessings.

To improve their skills faster, most players will be more inclined to upgrade their weapons. Additionally players, they should also consider upgrading the weapons they use with their squadmates to increase their power as well. Shepard, for example, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will increase the effectiveness of the weapon when used in conjunction with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are used in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, in which you combine gemstones with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the level of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses in the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The quality of a jewel can be improved at the Jeweler in stages that range from Crude to Royal. Based on the tier of the jewel it will give different stat boosts when inserted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler can craft the highest levels of gems except for the rare and legendary ones, which you must be at certain levels to gain. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped out by a different jewel of the same kind without destroying the original one. However you can only swap out a jewel in an equipment piece only once.

The use of more jewels in the movement can make it feel more comfortable and is typically used for aesthetic reasons. In addition to improving performance, the jewels create an area that is stronger than steel, so the repeated friction from pivots won't cause damage as easily.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These glyphs give a slight boost and can be freely exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be taken out and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial benefits. You can find them in the starting area as rewards for personal stories or loot. They are also available from vendors as well as through the completion of road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers, and found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but beneficial boost in movement speed and evasion. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same way to how a player can acquire armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment comes with a slot for an upgrade that can be either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets also grant additional bonuses and abilities that are active whenever the hero is not in combat. This enables the hero to be more effective when not active and also helps make up for a lack of a strong team or any slots from the talent tree which would normally be filled with the hero's ideal stats.

A good rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is particularly true if an item has multiple stats that you'd like to upgrade as it's usually more beneficial to upgrade one crucial stat than two subpar ones.

In the beginning of the game, players in the jungle are likely to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red in the middle and top players typically choose either a pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can impact the hero's ability to manage the map.

In addition to the items mentioned above, players can also discover a variety of other trinkets in the game in the form of awards and trophies. These can be earned through completing certain milestones in the story, for instance the main quest of a chapter or killing a certain boss. These achievements can be seen by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
