Line-up

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums and was a more ferocious, consistent effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the development of the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live performance which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released their new studio album a few months after and then embarked on a world tour support the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
