Replacement Handles For Windows

Window handles are one of the most frequently used elements of double-glazed windows. Over time, they may be worn out or rusty.

You'll have to know your current handle's spindle length and its fixings before you replace it. This can be done by examining the base of the previous handle.

Handle

Over time uPVC window locks and handles can be damaged by wear and tear, or accidental or deliberate damage. It is possible that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open or not even locked. It could be tempting to replace the entire window unit if this happens, but it is not always required. It is often the scenario that a replacement handle or lock will suffice.

The espagnolette design is the most common uPVC window handle. This has a spindle which extends from the handle and slots into a gearbox which operates the multipoint locking mechanism within the window. It's important to match the appropriate handle and lock to your windows in order to ensure they work together correctly. When replacing the uPVC window handle, it's an ideal idea to use screw cover caps in order to secure the screws and shield them from corrosion. You can also use a washer, spacer or other sealant to ensure a more secure fit. A screw cap in place will also stop debris and water from getting into the handle and damaging the handle.

After the handle has been removed from the window, it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle and also the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions properly and will also keep dirt out of the multipoint lock.

Hinges

These hinges are designed to open fully in a crisis and have an easy-cleaning position. A squeaky hinge could be an indication that the hinges require to be replaced. This is usually due to metal friction against metal. If the noise continues an ounce of lubricant will help.

Espag sliding door handles are equipped with a mental spindle on their back that is attached to the frame of the window and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handle have pegs which are fixed in place by three or four screws which are fixed to the sash and frame.

Once you've found the correct replacement, it's simple to fit. Remove any screws that attach to the trim from the casement cover, and carefully lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any trim screws that are rusted and compare the new operating lever with the old to make sure they are in line. Then, screw the new lever to the window frame, replace any screws that are rusted or bent, and then place the casement cover over the mechanism.
