1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its sibling the i3 EVO, are identical robots that differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying features. That makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots are proficient at removing surface dirt on floors and carpets and are able to maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home, which help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ doesn't have obstacle avoidance capabilities like the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we tested. It can get stuck on power cords or socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces, like hardwood and rug.

iRobot suggests that you clean the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or clutter it might encounter. It is also recommended to keep the filters and dust bin clear to avoid becoming clogged. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is low it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station's dust bin. It then continues cleaning from where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes around three hours to fully recharge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line and is equipped with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and -- the most important feature of all -- it has an auto vacuum cleaner-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ is able to remember up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, an application that allows it to map rooms so it can clean them more efficiently. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot using voice or through the app.

The i7+ is quicker and more maneuverable in our tests compared to the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from all surfaces including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin which removes major maintenance sources and reduces recurring cost.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room and sweep an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. After being connected, to give voice commands to the i7+, for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world filled with vacuums with cords that are like minivans and buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like a sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of homes, yet it is also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that can provide power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels cleaner air back into your home. Its specialized head uses stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large dust or crumbs. It has three different suction modes that can be adapted to the task. It quickly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum and back.

The model comes with an attached dock that charges the Dyson to 100 percent within 3.5 hours. It also offers easy access to 2 attachments and the handheld. This is a huge improvement over previous Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited running time. As CR's tests show, its claims to run up to 60 minutes are misleading. This is an average not an extraordinary time to run an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. This is still enough to get rid of the majority of a typical-sized home however, it's not enough to get every single area (though an additional run-through often can be effective). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is significantly better on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums, the 694 is an affordable model that's an excellent option for those who don't wish to spend too much on a robot. It's capable of sucking up most types of debris and sizes during our tests, and it frequently goes over the same areas multiple times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front makes it possible to reach corners and edges of walls.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and help you navigate your home. However, it lacks the mapping capabilities of more advanced models, including our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. As a result, it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't as sturdy, and often runs out of battery power before returning to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in most respects in that it has fewer components that require regular cleaning and is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower costs for recurring maintenance, has more advanced automation capabilities and is more efficient in maneuvering itself. It also has a larger dustbin and can charge faster.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most reasons, since it has a longer battery life, the ability to change its suction power mode manually, comes with physical boundary strips, and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It's also more durable, has a stronger motor, and can perform better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a brand you see on all sorts of home electronics, so it comes as no surprise that they're also one of the most reputable mop and robot vacuum manufacturers. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology to navigate and avoid obstacles.

The app offers a variety of options to customize your robotic cleaner, including virtual barriers mopping water levels, behavior adjustments docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to comprehend and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our testing our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86% of it. However, it wasn't particularly well with higher-up objects like cords or socks, which was disappointing. It's also more expensive than the other models that we tested, and this could be a deal breaker for certain shoppers.

The smart auto vacuum cleaner comes with an onboard camera that is accessible via the app. You can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station.
